If you’re knitting in the round, the vertical line always means knit and the empty box means purl. Each line of the chart is read from right to left.
If you’re knitting flat, i.e. to and fro, the odd numbered rows are knitted the same as in the round. The even numbered rows are knit from left to right across the chart, with the vertical line meaning purl and the empty box meaning knit.
