FANCY CABLE (ФАНТАЗИЙНАЯ КОСА)

Stitch Multiple: Multiple of 26 + 1 + 2 edge stitches (selvedge stitches). It’s good practice to specify selvedge stitches separately.

Abbreviations:

  • k: knit
  • p: purl
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • yo: yarn over
  • cn: cable needle
  • C4B (Cable 4 Back): Slip 2 sts to cn and hold in back, k2, k2 from cn.
  • C4F (Cable 4 Front): Slip 2 sts to cn and hold in front, k2, k2 from cn.
  • k2tog: Knit two stitches together.
  • ssk: Slip, slip, knit (slip 1 knitwise, slip 1 knitwise, knit the two slipped stitches together through the back loops). This is a left-leaning decrease. We’ll use ssk instead of describing the снять 1 первую протяжку each time.
  • sk2p Slip one stitch knitwise, knit two stitches together, pass the slipped stitch over the k2tog stitch. This is a double decrease.
  • RS: Right Side
  • WS: Wrong Side
  • selv st: Selvege Stitch.

Instructions:

Begin and end each row with a selv st. (This replaces “Каждый р. начинать и закончить кром. п.”)

  • Row 1 (RS): selv st, p1, * yo, k4, ssk, C4B, k2tog, yo, p1, yo, ssk, C4F, k2tog, k4, yo, p1; rep from * to last st, selv st.
  • Row 2 (WS) and all even rows: selv st, Knit the knits and purl the purls (work stitches “as they appear”). This replaces “2-й и очередные чет. р. вязать “как смотрят петли””. It’s much clearer. selv st.
  • Row 3: selv st, p1,* p2, yo, k4, ssk, k2, k2tog, yo, p3, yo, ssk, k2, k2tog, k4, yo, p1; rep from * to last st, selv st.
  • Row 5: selv st, p1, * p2, k1, yo, C4F, ssk, k2tog, yo, p5, yo, ssk, k2tog, C4B, yo, k1, p1; rep from * to last st, selv st.
  • Row 7: selv st, p1 * p2, k2, yo, k4, ssk, p7, k2tog, k4, yo, k2, p1; rep from * to last st, selv st.
  • Row 9: selv st, p1, * p2, k3, yo, C4F, ssk, p5, k2tog, C4B, yo, k3, p1; rep from * to last st, selv st.
  • Row 11: selv st, p1,* p2, k4, yo, k4, ssk, p3, k2tog, k4, yo, k4, p1; rep from * to last st, selv st.
  • Row 13: selv st,p1, * p2, k4, p1, yo, C4F, ssk, p1, k2tog, C4B, yo, p1, k4, p1; rep from * to last st, selv st.
  • Row 15: selv st, p1 * p2, k4, p2, yo, k4, sk2p, k4, yo, p2, k4, p1; rep from * to last st, selv st.
  • Repeat rows 1-16. (This replaces “Повт. р. 1- 16.”) Note that it’s 1-16, not 1-15, as that’s how many unique rows there are.

Key Improvements and Notes:

  • Selvedge Stitches: Clearly stated at the beginning.
  • Standard Abbreviations: Used throughout. ssk is a crucial improvement for readability.
  • “As They Appear”: Replaced the Russian phrase with the standard English equivalent.
  • Structure: The use of * for repeats, and clear row numbering, make the pattern much easier to follow.
  • Double Decrease: Using ‘sk2p’ for the double decrease (снять 1 двойную протяжку) makes it concise.
  • Consistent use of p1 before and after the repeat.

  1. Love that you are doing this. Is there any way to get a more in focus chart or text pattern to read. Some of the letters/symbols are illegible when zooming in. Thank you for your efforts.

  2. I played around with this pattern for a bit and thought I’d write out what I came up with, because the chart is actually pretty tiny and it might be hard for some people to read.

    * Worked over a 26 stitch repeat:

Row 1: p1, yo, k4, ssk, Cable Right, k2tog, yo, p1, yo, ssk, Cable Left, k2tog, k4, yo.

Row 2 and all even rows: work back in pattern, knitting the knit stitches and purling the purl stitches. Yarn overs are always purled on the following wrong side row.

    Row 3: p2, yo, k4, ssk, k2, k2tog, yo, p3, yo, ssk, k2, k2tog, k4, yo, p1.

    Row 5: p2, k1, yo, Cable Left, ssk, k2tog, yo, p5, yo, ssk, k2tog, Cable Right, yo, k1, p1.

    Row 7: p2, k2, yo, k4, ssk, p7, k2tog, k4, yo, k2, p1.

    Row 9: p2, k3, yo, Cable Left, ssk, p5, k2tog, Cable Right, yo, k3, p1.

    Row 11: p2, k4, yo, k4, ssk, p3, k2tog, k4, yo k4, p1.

    Row 13: p2, k4, p1, yo, Cable Left, ssk, p1, k2tog, yo, p1, k4, p1.

    Row 15: p2, k4, p2, yo, k4, sk2p, k4, yo, p2, k4, p1.

Cable Right: Slip the first two stitches on the left needle on to a cable needle and hold in back of work. Knit the next two stitches on the left needle like normal. Then knit the two stitches off the cable needle.
Alternative Method: Going in front the first and second stitches on the left needle, insert the right needle as if to purl into the third and fourth stitches but instead pull all four stitches off the needle. Quickly put the first and second stitches back on the left needle. Then put the other two stitches from the right needle back onto the left needle. Now with this new order, knit these four stitches as normal.

Cable Left: Slip the first two stitches on the left needle on to a cable needle and hold in front of work. Knit the next two stitches on the left needle like normal. Then knit the two stitches off the cable needle.
Alternative Method: Going behind the first and second stitches on the left needle, insert the right needle as if to purl into the third and fourth stitches but instead pull all four stitches off the needle. Quickly put the first and second stitches back on the left needle. Then put the other two stitches from the right needle back onto the left needle. Now with this new order, knit these four stitches as normal.

sk2p: slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over.
